European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) is a network of excellence that gathers together the top machine learning researchers, with a mission to harness the best European expertise and make Europe more attractive to talent.
The network operates through ELLIS Units and joint programs. ELLIS Units are located across Europe and they facilitate wide collaboration. Beyond just a virtual network amongst institutions, units are new working environments enabling outstanding researchers to combine cutting-edge research paired with the creation of start-ups and industrial impact. (Read more about the units from the ELLIS website.)
A few ELLIS Units will soon be expanded to ELLIS Institutes having a key role in the network. We aim to grow ELLIS Unit Helsinki and establish an ELLIS Institute in Finland. Read more →
What we do at ELLIS Unit Helsinki
Finland contributes to a concerted European effort through ELLIS Unit Helsinki. The unit focuses on machine learning, in particular, probabilistic modeling and Bayesian inference, simulator-based inference, data-efficient deep learning, privacy-preserving machine learning and interactive artificial intelligence.
ELLIS Unit Helsinki is hosted by the Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence FCAI. The unit also coordinates ELISE – a European Network of Artificial Intelligence Excellence Centres. The ELISE project builds upon the ELLIS organization.
ELLIS Unit Helsinki hosted the third ELLIS Doctoral Symposium in 2023. Read more →

Researchers
Join the network of 1000 leading ML and AI researchers and take part in shaping future developments of the ELLIS society:
Become an ELLIS Supporter: Everyone supporting the mission of ELLIS can sign up to become an ELLIS Supporter. Read more →
Apply to become an ELLIS Member: Membership in the ELLIS society is open to scientists who regularly publish in top-tier venues in machine learning-driven fields. Read more about the membership criteria and how to become an ELLIS member →
ELLIS Fellows and Scholars: ELLIS Fellows are high-caliber scientists advancing the field, creating a community and giving a voice to Machine Learning and AI. ELLIS Scholars are outstanding junior scientists. Only directors of Programs or Units can nominate Fellows and Scholars. Every proposed Fellow/Scholar goes through an evaluation process by the ELLIS Fellow committee. Read more →
ELLIS Faculty: In addition to Fellows and Scholars, ELLIS Unit Helsinki also has Faculty members. Faculty members are ELLIS Members, willing to contribute to ELLIS activities, researchers of diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise in the field of machine learning who already have a status of an ELLIS Fellow or Scholar, or are on track to become one. The Unit’s Faculty members can also be non-academic but must have a strong publishing record. Does this match your profile? Contact our Unit Coordinator to find out more!
Industry

Become an ELLIS Sponsor: Your company can start or deepen your collaboration with leading scientists by becoming an ELLIS sponsor. The collaboration is designed on the basis of the needs and interests of the parties involved. For more details, please contact the ELLIS Unit Helsinki coordinator.
ELLIS PhD & Postdoc Program
The ELLIS PhD & Postdoc Program supports excellent young researchers across Europe by connecting them to leading researchers and offering a variety of networking and training activities, including ELLIS boot camps, summer schools, and workshops of the ELLIS programs. ELLIS PhDs and postdocs conduct cutting-edge, curiosity-driven research in machine learning or a related study area with the goal of publishing in top-tier conferences in the field.
There are two tracks within the PhD & Postdoc Program: the academic track and the industry track. These tracks have separate requirements for admission and criteria for activity during the appointment, but otherwise offer the same benefits, network, and resources to the applicant.
There are two ways to become an ELLIS PhD student: (1) via yearly open call and (2) via a nomination process; ELLIS postdocs are currently selected only via the nomination process (2):
ELLIS PhD Program runs a central open call once a year in fall that is intended for researchers who want to start a PhD with one of the ELLIS fellows/scholars or unit faculty. Currently, the central application process is only for new PhD students. Learn more about the application process and requirements here.
ELLIS fellows, scholars, or unit faculty may also nominate PhD students or postdocs who are already working with them to become ELLIS PhD students or postdocs in the academic or industry track. Read more about the nomination process here.
